CHAPTER THIRTEEN

She hadn't bothered with pretenses. Kris going off on that Harris character had turned her on. Claudia wasn't sure where that came from or if it was a healthy reaction, but it didn't matter.

Kris hadn't voiced any complaints about her reaction, and they'd spent the night in the same bed. That was a rarity, even though they'd been living together. There were two bedrooms in his little apartment above the Workshop. They were both independent and needed to get used to having someone in their lives.

Apparently, having separate rooms was a part of that process. It didn't mean they didn't share one from time to time, though.

Kris was the first to get out of bed. She wondered if he'd just gone to his room to sleep after she'd conked out, but after a quick shower, she realized he'd gotten his day started with a workout. When he came back, he smelled of peppermint.

"It's not okay for me to be turned on by Santa," she growled as he passed her on his way to the shower.

"Sure it is," he answered with a smirk, patting her backside as he pulled his shirt off.

Claudia shook her head, then headed into the kitchen and made breakfast for both of them. He didn't have high standards, mostly just fried bacon and eggs to get his protein. She took it an extra step, setting him up with a stack of bacon pancakes with a pat of butter and a copious amount of maple syrup.

"You are just the fucking best." Kris grinned. The towel was still wrapped around his waist.

He dug into the stack before the syrup could get the pancakes all soggy. Claudia settled in with a stack of her own.

"Pancakes are the only thing I know how to make," she explained, mumbling around a mouthful. "I used to make bacon pancakes for my siblings for Sunday breakfast. My folks usually slept in, and we got up early to watch the cartoons, so it ended up being the only meal my parents ever taught me to make."

"Practice made perfect." Kris grunted in approval.

"Don't think I'm going to be making this on the regular, mind you."

"Just when I stick you good?"

She tilted her head. "I'd put it more delicately, but pretty much, yeah."

He grinned, but his retort was interrupted by a knock on the door. He held his finger up to tell her a reply was still coming her way, but the door needed to be answered first.

Valy was waiting, looking annoyingly rested and ready for the day as he stepped inside.

"I've been digging," the elf announced, then hesitated as if questioning whether the news could wait until they'd had their breakfast. He decided it couldn't and approached. "Looking into that Zeke Harris. He’s nothing special. Legacy kid. Harvard Business School on his parents' dime, as Claudia predicted."

Claudia picked up the papers Valy had laid out for them to take a look at. "Young guy and already a CEO. He probably thinks there's nothing in the world he can't get.
